Sojourner Truth Preschool Program (STCDC)
Sojourner Truth Child Development Center (STCDC) is named after Sojourner Truth (1797–1833), a woman who, as a child and young adult, lived in slavery and who later, as a free woman, crusaded to abolish slavery and promote women's rights.
STCDC's Preschool Program emphasizes play–based care in a family–friendly environment. We also work closely with STCDC's onsite Infant–Toddler Program in order to meet children's needs as they grow and mature.
Center Activities
STCDC uses an integrated curriculum that involves a combination of teacher–planned and child–inspired topics of interest.
Teachers prepare the environment in a challenging and stimulating way; incorporating music and movement, language development, listening skills, creative expression, science, gardening, dramatic play, nutrition, water and sand play and a variety of small and large motor development activities.
Our play–based program allows for children to make choices throughout their day, offering varied opportunities for fostering independence, creativity and positive self–esteem. Children are naturally motivated to experiment and investigate their world, learning vital social, emotional and cognitive skills as they play and discover.
Our pre–kindergarten program for four–year–olds meets Monday through Friday during the months of September through June. The group meets for 30–45 minutes per session, and it is designed to encourage a balance of child–initiated and teacher–facilitated activities.
Children are provided with many opportunities to develop social skills such as cooperating, helping, negotiating and conflict resolution– skills that will benefit them the most as they prepare for kindergarten.
Parent Involvement and Participation
Parents are welcome any time at STCDC. We have a Parent Support Committee that meets regularly to help plan special events for the program. Additionally, we host annual parent workdays and social events in an effort to build a sense of community among our families.
