Ohlone Kids’ Club Goals and Philosophy
Ohlone Kids’ Club (OKC) provides a warm, nurturing, family-like environment for children, families and staff. We teach and model positive, caring, supportive relationships with the children and staff, and are always looking for opportunities to help the children connect with the school and the community.
OKC was accredited in May 1999 by the National AfterSchool Association (NAA), and reaccredited in May 2002.
Ohlone Kids’ Club Activities
OKC has two classrooms that include a complete kitchen and restrooms, comfortable “living room” areas, and art and building spaces. Teaching areas include Saturn (our original classroom), the kitchen area (which we make available for classroom use) and the outdoor play area.
Each month, a theme is established and our staff creates two calendars of activities; one for the kindercare program and one for the mixed-age program. We are fortunate enough to be located next to Ohlone Farm, where the animals, gardens and fruit are our back yard. We regularly take kindergartners to the farm and have lunch, play and plant. The children learn to be gentle with the animals, which teaches them to be gentle with each other as well.
Using words to resolve conflicts and showing respect for others is very important at OKC. We have a group “peacetime” activity weekly, in which children can tell the group about their feelings and actions. At the end of each month, peacemaker rewards are given out for acts of kindness or helpfulness.
Our program also places an emphasis on community service. OKC’s Kids’ Council, comprised of fourth and fifth graders, participates in two community service projects per year, as well as helping with daily center tasks and leading group activities.
Parent Information and Participation
We have a very active parent board that helps with potlucks, field trips and in the classroom. In order to build a sense of community among our families, we host a family event each month, such as ice-skating or a campout.
Each teacher at OKC has a two-week block of time in which parents are invited to sign up for an individual conference. A progress report is completed for each child and shared with parents.
